রোমানি জাতি

রোমানি জাতি কথ্য ভাষায় রোমা নামে পরিচিত, একটি ইন্দো-আর্য নৃগোষ্ঠী, ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে যাযাবর ভ্রমণকারী। বেশিরভাগ রোমানি জনগণ ইউরোপে বাস করে, এবং প্রবাসী জনগোষ্ঠী আমেরিকাতেও বাস করে।

ইংরেজি ভাষায়, রোমানি জনগণ ব্যাপকভাবে জিপসিস নামে পরিচিত,[২৫] যা অনেক রোমানি লোকের দ্বারা বেআইনিতা ও অনিয়মের পাশাপাশি জাতিগত অপবাদ হিসাবে শব্দটির ঐতিহাসিক ব্যবহারের কারণে অপমানজনক বলে বিবেচিত হয়।[২৬][২৭][২৮] ১৯৭১ সালের প্রথম বিশ্ব রোমানি কংগ্রেসের অংশগ্রহণকারীরা সর্বসম্মতিক্রমে তাদের পূর্বোক্ত নেতিবাচক অর্থের কারণে জিপসি সহ রোমানি জনগণের জন্য সমস্ত বহিরাগত বা বিদেশি নামের ব্যবহার প্রত্যাখ্যান করার পক্ষে ভোট দেয়।[২৭]

ভাষাগত ও জেনেটিক প্রমাণ থেকে বোঝা যায়, যে রোমা জাতি ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের উত্তরাঞ্চলে উদ্ভূত হয়েছিল; বিশেষ করে, আধুনিক ভারতের রাজস্থান, হরিয়ানা ও পাঞ্জাব অঞ্চল।[২৯][৩০][৩১] তারা ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে আছে, তবে তাদের সর্বাধিক ঘনীভূত জনসংখ্যা ইউরোপে রয়েছে, বিশেষ করে মধ্য, পূর্ব ও দক্ষিণ ইউরোপ (দক্ষিণ ফ্রান্স সহ), পাশাপাশি পশ্চিম এশিয়া (প্রধানত তুরস্ক)। রোমানি জনগণ ১৪ শতকের দিকে পশ্চিম এশিয়া ও ইউরোপে আসে।[৩২]
