বিভিন্ন উপাত্ত প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ, পরিচালন এবং সংঘবদ্ধকরণের মাধ্যমে প্রাপ্ত ফলাফলকে তথ্য হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয় যা কোন মানুষের মস্তিষ্কে প্রেরণ করা হলে তার জ্ঞান বৃদ্ধি পায়। একটি ধারণা হিসেবে নিলে তথ্য শব্দটির প্রচুর অর্থ আমাদের প্রাত্যহিক জীবনে এবং প্রযুক্তি খাতে দৃষ্ট হয়। সাধারণভাবে বলতে গেলে তথ্যের ধারণাটি আরো বেশ কয়েকটি ধারণার সাথে নিবিড়ভাবে সম্পর্কিত: বাঁধা, যোগাযোগ, কন্ট্রোল সিস্টেম, উপাত্ত, গড়ন, নির্দেশনা, জ্ঞান, অর্থ তত্ত্ব, উদ্দীপনা, গঠন, ধারণা এবং জ্ঞান উপস্থাপন।
