বর্ণ (সামাজিক শ্রেণি)

বর্ণ হল সামাজিক স্তরবিন্যাসের রূপ যা অন্তর্বিবাহ দ্বারা চিহ্নিত করা হয়, জীবনধারার বংশগত সংক্রমণ যা প্রায়শই শ্রেণিবিভাগে পেশা, আচারিক অবস্থা অন্তর্ভুক্ত করে, এবং প্রথাগত সামাজিক মিথস্ক্রিয়া এবং বিশুদ্ধতা ও দূষণের সাংস্কৃতিক ধারণার উপর ভিত্তি করে বর্জন।^[১]^[২]^[৩]

এর দৃষ্টান্তমূলক নৃতাত্ত্বিক উদাহরণ হল ভারতের হিন্দু সমাজকে কঠোর সামাজিক গোষ্ঠীতে বিভক্ত করা, যার শিকড় ভারতের প্রাচীন ইতিহাসে রয়েছে এবং বর্তমান সময় পর্যন্ত টিকে আছে।^[১]^[৪] যাইহোক, নগরায়ণ এবং ইতিবাচক কর্মসূচীর ফলে ভারতে বর্ণপ্রথার অর্থনৈতিক গুরুত্ব হ্রাস পাচ্ছে। নৃতাত্ত্বিক ও সমাজবিজ্ঞানীদের দ্বারা অনেক পাণ্ডিত্যের বিষয়, হিন্দু বর্ণ ব্যবস্থাকে কখনও কখনও হিন্দুধর্ম এবং ভারতের বাইরে বিদ্যমান বর্ণ-সদৃশ সামাজিক বিভাজনের অধ্যয়নের জন্য সাদৃশ্যমূলক ভিত্তি হিসাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়। "জাতি" শব্দটি পিঁপড়া, মৌমাছি ও তিরমিটের মতো সামাজিক পোকামাকড়ের আকারগত গোষ্ঠীতেও প্রয়োগ করা হয়।^[৫]
