এই তালিকাটিতে কেবলমাত্র একক পৌরসভাগুলির আইন দ্বারা সংজ্ঞায়িত সীমানার অভ্যন্তরের জনসংখ্যা নির্দেশ করা হয়েছে। কোনও কেন্দ্রীয় নগরীর উপকণ্ঠ বা উপশহরগুলিতে অবস্থিত জনসংখ্যাগুলিকে পৃথক করে তালিকাভুক্ত করা হয়েছে। এছাড়া কোনও পৌরপিণ্ডের আইনি সীমানা-বহির্ভুত স্থানগুলিকে গণনায় ধরা হয়নি। সুতরাং মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মহানগর এলাকাগুলির জনসংখ্যা বিবেচনা করলে ভিন্ন একটি মর্যাদাক্রম সৃষ্টি হওয়া অবশ্যম্ভাবী।
