প্রাচীনকালের ইতিহাস হলো প্রাক ধ্রুপদী যুগ অথবা মানুষের ইতিহাসের শুরু থেকে প্রারম্ভিক মধ্যযুগ পর্যন্ত অতীতের ঘটনার নথিভূক্ত সমষ্টি[১]। নথিভুক্ত ইতিহাসের ব্যাপ্তি খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ৩,০০০ বছরের প্রাক-লিখন কালের তথ্যাবলী থেকে লেখার প্রাচীনতম আবিষ্কৃত অনুলিপি সুমেরীয় কিউনিফর্মসহ আনুমানিক ৫,০০০ বছরের।[২]
