১৩৫০ বঙ্গাব্দ বা ১৯৪৩ সালে অবিভক্ত বাংলায় যে দুর্ভিক্ষ দেখা দেয় তাই '''পঞ্চাশের মন্বন্তর''' নামে পরিচিত। ইংরেজ সরকারের কিছু বিতর্কিত নীতি এবং উদাসীনতার কারণে এই দুর্ভিক্ষ ত্বরান্বিত হয়। [[দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ|দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের]] সময় জাপান বার্মা দখল করে নিলে বার্মা থেকে বাংলায় চাল আমদানী বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। কেন্দ্রীয় সরকার পরিস্থিতি মোকাবেলায় ব্যর্থতার পরিচয় দেয়। ভাদ্র-আশ্বিন মাসে পরিস্থিতি চরম আকার ধারণ করে। অনুমান করা হয় এই দুর্ভিক্ষে বাংলায় প্রায় ৫০ লক্ষ লোক মারা যায়।
