খান ১৯৯৬ সালের বলিউডি চলচ্চিত্র "দারার"এ খল-নায়ক চরিত্রে অভিনয়ের মাধ্যমে চলচ্চিত্র শিল্পে প্রবেশ করেন। উক্ত চলচ্চিত্রে অসাধারণ অভিনয়ের জন্য তিনি ফিল্মফেয়ার শ্রেষ্ঠ খল-নায়ক পুরস্কার লাভ করেন। যদিও তিনি অভিনেতা হিসেবে তার একক চলচ্চিত্রগুলোতে খুব একটা সাফল্য দেখাতে পারেননি, তিনি তার ভাই [[সালমান খান]] এর বিপরীত অভিনীত "প্যায়ার কিয়া তো ডারনা ক্যা" (১৯৯৮), গর্ব: প্রাইড এন্ড অনার (২০০৪) এর মত মিশ্রিত নায়কের চরিত্রে অভিনয় করে সফল হন।
