Spelling

I know the name of this language is spelled পঞ্জাবি in Hindi/Punjabi/other languages, but I am quite sure it's পাঞ্জাবি in Bengali. The spelling in my Bangla Academy Shongkhipto Bangla Obhidhan and a quick Google hits check both support that. --সামীরুদ্দৌলা ২২:২০, ১৬ অক্টোবর ২০০৮ (ইউটিসি)

I am looking at recent books and newspapers published in West Bengal and apparently they now spell it পঞ্জাবী/পঞ্জাবি over there. It's the spelling Anandabazar prefers as well, so this new spelling has become somewhat institutionalized in WB. This is a new trend in West Bengal. I am looking at Sunitikumar's ভাষা-প্রকাশ বাঙ্গালা ব্যাকরণ published in West Bengal in mid 20th century and he uses পাঞ্জাবী in his book. But, পঞ্জাব and পঞ্জাবী has also been in Bengali for a long time. Rajshekhar Basu's famous 20th century dictionary চলন্তিকা has no entry on পাঞ্জাব, but does have one on পঞ্জাব and also lists its derivative পঞ্জাবী. So it's evident that পঞ্জাবী and পাঞ্জাবী have both existed side by side for some time, but very recently there has been a conscious effort in West Bengal to prefer one over the other. --অর্ণব (আলাপ | অবদান) ২২:৪০, ১৬ অক্টোবর ২০০৮ (ইউটিসি)

I see. I just checked on the Samsad Bengali-English Online Dictionary and found পঞ্জাবি. So I see that there is variation. In that case, both names should appear in the title. I have researched some more. The spelling dictionary of Poshchim Banga Bangla Akademi has no entry on পঞ্জাবি. They have also redirected পঞ্জাব to পাঞ্জাব, i.e. they prefer পাঞ্জাব over পঞ্জাব, and lastly they have an entry on পাঞ্জাবি, which means they consider it to be the only correct spelling. The spelling dictionary published by the Bangla Academy of Dhaka also prefers পাঞ্জাবি. Since the academies on both sides prefer পাঞ্জাবি, I think we can safely use that spelling here. আমারই ভুল। 'পাঞ্জাবি'-ই পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বাংলা আকাদেমি অনুমোদিত বানান। আমি আনন্দবাজারের বানানের সঙ্গে গুলিয়ে ফেলেছিলাম। 'পাঞ্জাব' ও 'পাঞ্জাবি'-ই সরকারি বানান। তবে ভারতের জাতীয় সঙ্গীতে 'পঞ্জাব' বানানটিই চলবে। কারণ রবীন্দ্রনাথ এই বানানটিই লিখেছিলেন। --অর্ণব দত্ত ০৮:৩৬, ১৭ অক্টোবর ২০০৮ (ইউটিসি)
