Zaheen, I'm curious, almost all Bangla books I read had his name written as কোপার্নিকাস। Where does this কপের্নিকুস spelling come from? I'm pretty sure that he's referenced everywhere in Bangladeshi books as কোপার্নিকাস। Check out the Text books. --Ragib 03:09, ১৩ এপ্রিল ২০০৬ (ইউটিসি)

Bangla textbooks (even the Bangla Academy biggankosh) are horrible in transliterating the European names. Our "learned" textbook writers usually come to know of these European people through English, and haphazardly transliterate how they are pronounced in English, not French/Italian/etc. And even after that their work remains poor.

For example, Poisson is called "পয়সন" in bangla texts, but the correct prn. is পোয়াসঁ, Henri Becquerel should be অঁরি বেকেরেল, instead it's হেনরি, the errors are everywhere. Interesting. But I think we need to be consistent. We write United States of America as যুক্তরাষ্ট্রু because that was commonly used in books and news papers. If you look in the English wikipedia, you'd see the article on en:Battle of Plassey, because that is the commonly used name. Alternately, we can keep the current bad transliterations, but redirect them to the actual ones. These things need to be rectified somewhere, and wikipedia is the best place to do it, without getting mired by the incompetence of our textbook writers.
