শহরটি স্থানীয়ভাবে '{{lang|ms|বন্দর|italic=yes}}' (অর্থ 'শহর') নামে পরিচিত। তবে এই নামে শহরের ঠিক কতটুকু অংশ বোঝানো হয় তা নির্দিষ্ট নয়। সরকারিভাবে স্বীকৃত মূল শহরের পাশাপাশি এই নামটি দ্বারা বিশেষভাবে [[পুসাত বন্দর]]কে (শাব্দিক অর্থ 'নগর কেন্দ্র') বোঝায়। এছাড়াও শহরের অন্যান্য নামে নামকৃত অংশকেও বোঝায় যা ২০০৭ সালের পূর্বে রাজধানীর অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল না। আবার মূল শহরের বাইরের শহরতলি এমনকি কখনো কখনো সম্পূর্ণ [[ব্রুনাই-মুয়ারা জেলা]]কে এই নামে ডাকা হয়। জেলার বাইরের অধিবাসীরা বিশেষভাবে জেলাকে বন্দর হিসেবে বিশেষায়িত করে।
The city is colloquially known by the local people as '{{lang|ms|Bandar|italic=yes}}' which is the Malay word for '(the) City'. However, the exact area that the name refers to may differ in conversational context: apart from referring to the same areas as the city's official jurisdiction, 'Bandar' may also refer exclusively to the [[Pusat Bandar, Bandar Seri Begawan|Pusat Bandar]] (literally 'City Centre') area of the capital to distinguish from other named areas within the city, whereby they were not part of the capital prior to 2007. Meanwhile, it may sometimes extend beyond the city's proper area, encompassing its surrounding urbanised areas and even to the extent of covering the whole of [[Brunei-Muara District]]. The reference of the latter is commonly being used by the residents outside of the district.
