আউগুস্তুস তথা অক্তাভিয়ান একটি ধনী পরিবারে জন্ম নেন ১৮ বছর বয়সে তার পিতামহের ভ্রাতা জুলিয়াস সিজারের (ইউলিউস কায়েসার) পালিত সন্তান ও উত্তরসূরী হিসেবে নামাঙ্কিত হন। সিজারের মৃত্যুর পর রোমে ক্ষমতার দ্বন্দ্ব সৃষ্টি হয়, এবং মার্ক অ্যান্টনি এবং লেপিদুসের সাথে তিনি তৃতীয় শাসক হিসেবে ৪৩ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে পুনর্গঠিত রোমান রাষ্ট্র শাসন করতে থাকেন। ৪২ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে সিজারের আততায়ী ব্রুটাস (ব্রুতুস) এবং কাসিউস-কে ফিলিপ্পিতে পরাজিত করার পর অক্তাভিয়ান ও মার্ক অ্যান্টনি রোমান সাম্রাজ্যকে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করে ফেলেন। অক্তাভিয়ান সাম্রাজ্যের পশ্চিম অংশ শাসনের অধিকার পান। এরপর অক্তাভিয়ান বিভিন্ন শত্রুর বিরুদ্ধে জয়লাভ করেন। ৩২ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে তিনি লেপিদুসকে এবং ৩১ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে তিনি অ্যান্টনি ও মিশরের রাণী ক্লিওপেট্রাকে পরাজিত করেন এবং এই সাথে গ্রিক-রোমান বিশ্বের একাধিপতিতে পরিণত হন। ৩১ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দ থেকে ২৩ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দ পর্যন্ত তিনি রোমান প্রজাতন্ত্রের একজন কনসাল হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ২৭ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে তিনি আউগুস্তুস উপাধি গ্রহণ করেন এবং ২৩ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে একনায়ক সম্রাটের মর্যাদা লাভ করেন। এরপর তিনি ধীরে ধীরে রোমান সাম্রাজ্যের প্রশাসনিক কাঠামোর সংস্কার সাধন করেন এবং ইউরোপের অনেক নতুন অঞ্চল বিজয় করেন। মৃত্যুর পর তাঁকে দেবতার মর্যাদা দেওয়া হয় এবং তাঁর পালিত পুত্র [[তিবেরিউস]] রোমান সম্রাট হন।
