কুণ্ডু (পদবি)

কুণ্ডু একটি সাধারণ বাঙালি হিন্দু উপাধি যা ভারত ও বাংলাদেশে পাওয়া যায়।

ইতিহাস সম্পাদনা

বাঙালি কায়স্থদের মধ্যে বাংলায় কুণ্ডু উপাধি পাওয়া যায়।^[১]^[২] ইতিহাসবিদ তেজরাম শর্মা উল্লেখ করেছেন যে উপাধিটি "এখন বাংলার কায়স্থদের মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ" রয়েছে এবং গুপ্ত যুগের প্রথম দিকের শিলালিপিতে এই ধরনের কায়স্থ উপাধিতে শেষ হওয়া ব্রাহ্মণদের নাম উল্লেখ করেছেন।^[১]

বাংলায়, খ্রিস্টীয় চতুর্থ শতাব্দীতে গুপ্ত সাম্রাজ্যের শাসনামলে, যখন আর্য কায়স্থ এবং ব্রাহ্মণদের দ্বারা পদ্ধতিগত এবং বৃহৎ আকারের উপনিবেশ স্থাপন হয়েছিল, তখন কায়স্থদের রাজ্যের বিষয়গুলি পরিচালনা করতে সাহায্য করার জন্য গুপ্তদের দ্বারা আনা হয়েছিল।^[৩] এই সময়কালে, কায়স্থরা একটি স্বতন্ত্র বর্ণে বিকশিত হয়নি, যদিও কায়স্থদের (লেখকদের) কার্যালয়টি যুগের শুরুর আগে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল, যা সমসাময়িক স্মৃতি থেকে প্রমাণিত হয়েছে। তেজরাম শর্মা নামে একজন ভারতীয় ইতিহাসবিদ বলেছেন

The names of brahmanas occurring in our inscriptions sometimes end in a non-brahmanic cognomen such as Bhatta, Datta and Kunda, etc., which are available in the inscriptions of Bengal. Surnames like Datta, Dama, Palita, Pala, Kunda (Kundu), Dasa, Naga and Nandin are now confined to Kayasthas of Bengal but not to brahmanas. Noticing brahmanic names with a large number of modern Bengali Kayastha cognomens in several early epigraphs discovered in Bengal, some scholars have suggested that there is a considerable brahmana element in the present day Kayastha community of Bengal. Originally the professions of Kayastha (scribe) and Vaidya (physician) were not restricted and could be followed by people of different varnas including the brahmanas. So there is every probability that a number of brahmana families were mixed up with members of other varnas in forming the present Kayastha and Vaidya communities of Bengal.^[১]
