ইসলামি স্বর্ণযুগের মুসলিম গণিতবিদ ও পদার্থবিজ্ঞানী

ইবনে সাহল (সম্পূর্ণ নাম আবু সা'দ আল আ'লা ইবন সাহল أبو سعد العلاء ابن سهل ৯৪০-১০০০ খ্রিস্টাব্দ) ইসলামের সোনালী যুগের[১] একজন ফারসি[২][৩][৪][৫] গণিতবিদ ও পদার্থবিদ ছিলেন। এছাড়াও তিনি বাগদাদের বুওয়াইহিদ আদালতের সাথে যুক্ত ছিলেন। তার নাম থেকে আমরা তার জন্মভুমির আন্দাজ করতে পারছি না।[৬]

মিলির পান্ডুলিপির একটি অংশ যা থেকে দেখা যাচ্ছে যে প্রতিসরণের সূত্রগুলো ইবন সাহলের আবিষ্কার এবং তা স্নেলের অনেক আগেই আবিষ্কার হয়েছিলো।(Rashed ১৯৯০ থেকে )

৯৮৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দের দিকে আলোক বিজ্ঞানের উপর একটি গ্রন্থ লেখার কারণে তিনি পরিচিত। ১৯৯৩ সালে রুশদি রাশেদ এই গ্রন্থের দুইটি পান্ডুলিপি উদ্ধার করেন দামেস্ক, আল জাহিরিয়্যা পান্ডুলিপি ৪৮৭১, ৩ fols এবং তেহরান, মিলি পান্ডুলিপি ৮৬৭, ৫১ fols. তেহরান পান্ডুলিপিটি খুবই খারাপভাবে নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে ও দামেস্ক পান্ডুলিপিটির একটি অনুচ্ছেদ সম্পূর্ণ উধাও হয়ে আছে। দামেস্ক পান্ডুলিপির শিরোনাম হচ্ছে ফি আল-আ'লা আল-মুহরিকা "জ্বলন্ত বাদ্যযন্ত্র বিষয়ে" ও তেহরান পান্ডুলিপির শিরোনাম হচ্ছে কিতাব আল হাররাকাত "জ্বলন্তদের বই"। ইবন সাহল হচ্ছে প্রথম মুসলিম পণ্ডিত যিনি টলেমির লেখা 'অপটিকস' গ্রন্থটি অধ্যায়ন করেছেন এবং তিনি ইবন আল হিশামের লেখা 'কিতাব আল মানাযির' এর গ্রন্থায়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন। ইবন সাহল বক্রীয় লেন্স ও দর্পণ এর ধর্ম নিয়ে কাজ করেছেন এবং কখনো কখনো তাকে প্রতিসরণ এর সূত্র (স্নেলের সূত্র)[৭] এর আবিষ্কারক ধরা হয়। ইবন সাহল এই সূত্রের সাহায্যে এমন লেন্সের গঠন বর্ণনা করেন যার কোনো জ্যমিতিক কেন্দ্র নেই। গ্রন্থের বাকি অংশে ইবন সাহল পরাবৃত্তীয় দর্পণ, এলিপসয়ডাল দর্পণ, উভোত্তল দর্পণ এবং হাইপারবোলিক বক্র রেখা আকার কিছু নীতি বর্ণনা করেন।
