Indian Krait = [[শাঁখামুঠি]] = ''Bungarus coeruleus'' is not কেউটে/Cobra because Cobras have hood/ফণা and Kraits dont. I am not sure of the correct english names of the bengali names like করেইত and চিতি. I canguess that the name চিতি may have come from some চিত্র on the body ofthe snake that may be bands or spots...and if it refers to bands then it could be Kraits..I noticed that in your article on banded Krait you called it কেউটে which I dont agree with.. But I repeat It is my opoinion.. and I may be wrong. Please verify with an expert and educate us. Thank you for your efforts on investigating this long debated issue. My thinking may have been also biased by the by the fact that the Bengali Biology School texts in West Bengal that I had read almost 20years back said (as I can remember) কেউটে = Cobra = ''Naja naja''.. But now I already know that Naja naja = not all Cobra but only Indian cobra.. So I figured কেউটে = Indian Cobra = ''Naja naja''. I remember faintly that Deepak Mitra said করেইত = Krait.. But trusting such an old that too verbal memory cannot be the basis of writing an encyclopedia article. Please go ahead and carry on your investigation. I will be eager to know the results of your enquiry. If you dont mind CC me the email you send to Deepak Mitra and request him to reply to all.
