== ইতিহাস ==
১৯৬৮ সালের ২০ মে [[জাতিসংঘ|জাতিসংঘের]] অর্থনীতি ও সামাজিক পরিষদের কাছে একটি চিঠি পাঠায় [[সুইডেন]] সরকার। চিঠির বিষয়বস্তু ছিল প্রকৃতি ও পরিবেশ দূষণ সম্পর্কে তাদের গভীর উদ্বেগের কথা। সে বছরই জাতিসংঘের পক্ষ থেকে পরিবেশ রক্ষার বিষয়টি সাধারণ অধিবেশনের আলোচ্যসূচিতে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়। পরের বছর জাতিসংঘের পক্ষ থেকে পরিবেশ রক্ষার বিষয়ে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা এবং সমাধানের উপায় খুঁজতে সদস্যরাষ্ট্রগুলোর সম্মতিতে [[সুইডেন|সুইডেনের]] রাজধানী [[স্টকহোম|স্টকহোমে]] ১৯৭২ সালের [[৫ জুন|৫]] থেকে ১৬ জুন ''জাতিসংঘ মানব পরিবেশ সম্মেলন'' অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। সম্মেলনটি ইতিহাসের প্রথম পরিবেশ-বিষয়ক আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনের স্বীকৃতি পায়। ১৯৭৩ সালে সম্মেলনের প্রথম দিন ৫ জুনকে [[জাতিসংঘ]] 'বিশ্ব পরিবেশ দিবস' হিসেবে ঘোষণা দেয়। ১৯৭৪ সাল থেকে প্রতিবছর দিবসটি বিশ্বব্যাপী পালিত হয়ে আসছে।<ref name="ছুটির দিনে"/>
