আকাশগঙ্গার ব্যাস আনুমানিকভাবে ১০০,০০০ [[আলোকবর্ষ]] বা ৯×১০<sup>১৭</sup> [[কিলোমিটার]]। ধারণা করা হয় এই ছায়াপথে কমপক্ষে ২০০ বিলিয়ন থেকে সর্বোচ্চ ৪০০ বিলিয়ন পর্যন্ত [[নক্ষত্র]] রয়েছে। সাম্প্রতিক পর্যবেক্ষনে দেখা যাচ্ছে, আগের ধারণা থেকে আকাশগঙ্গার ভর অনেক বেশি, এর ভর আমাদের নিকটবর্তী সবচেয়ে বড় ছায়াপথ [[অ্যান্ড্রোমিডা]] এর কাছাকাছি। আগে ধারণা করা হত এর ঘূর্ণন গতি প্রায় ২২০ কিমি/সেকেন্ড, কিন্তু সাম্প্রতিক গবেষণা অনুযায়ী তা প্রায় ২৫৪ কিমি/সেকেন্ড। এর ফলে আকাশগঙ্গার সর্বমোট ভর হিসাব করা হয়েছে প্রায় ৩ ট্রিলিয়ন [[:en:Solar Mass|সৌর ভর]], যা আগের ধারণার প্রায় দ্বিগুণ।
