==Debut Movie==
Sonali's first movie was Cheluvi aka the Flowering Tree (1992). The film is based on a Karnataka folk tale. Directed and written by Girish Karnad, it reflects on the role of women in Indian society (to serve loved ones without expectations, and regardless of her own suffering) and also contains an environmental message relating to deforestation. The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

===Synopsis===
Cheluvi, a young woman whose family lives in poverty, possesses a magical power which enables her to turn into a flowering tree. One day she confides in her sister and together they go deep into a forest. When her sister pours a pitcher of water over Cheluvi, she turns into the tree that grows exotic flowers which exude an intoxicating fragrance. Cheluvi instructs her sister to carefully gather as many of the flowers as she can without breaking any of her branches. After she had done so, her sister pours a second pitcher of water over Cheluvi, who then regains her human form.

On one of these trips to the forest, the sisters are followed by Kumar, the son of the village headman. Besotted by both Cheluvi and her fragrance, Kumar marries her, and they enjoy her flowering in private. One day, while Cheluvi is flowering in a private pool, she is spotted by the children of a nearby house. While Kumar is away, the village headman’s daughter Shyama persuades Cheluvi to reveal her secret, and forces her to flower in the forest. She and the other children then carelessly break her branches as they gather the flowers, permanently injuring both the woman and the tree.

Cheluvi asks the woodcutter who has taken her home to place her in front of her husband’s house. Kumar recognizes her, and together they venture into the forest. Cheluvi explains that if they can find her missing branches she will be able to regain her human form, but they discover that dozens of trees have now been felled and they are unable to find her branches.
