প্রাচীন বালিতে পসুপ্ত, ভৈরব, শিব সিদান্ত, বৈষ্ণব, বৌদ্ধ, ব্রহ্মা, ঋষি, সরা ও গণপতি - এ নয় হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়ের লোকদের আবাস ছিল। প্রত্যেক সম্প্রদায়ের লোকজন তাঁদের নির্দিষ্ট দেবতার পূজো দিতেন। বালীয় সংস্কৃতির পুরোটাই ভারতীয়, চীনাদের দ্বারা প্রভাবান্বিত এবং প্রথম শতক থেকে হিন্দু সংস্কৃতির বিকাশ ঘটেছে।

তিন দশক পূর্বে বালীয় অর্থনীতির অধিকাংশই কৃষিভিত্তিক ছিল। বর্তমানে পর্যটনশিল্প আয়ের প্রধান ক্ষেত্র ও ইন্দোনেশিয়ার অন্যতম সম্পদশালী অঞ্চল হিসেবে পরিচিতি পেয়েছে। ২০০৩ সালে ৮০% পর্যটন খাত সম্পর্কীয় ছিল। ২০০২ ও ২০০৫ সালের সন্ত্রাসবাদীদের বোমা আক্রমণে এর অর্থনীতির ব্যাপকভাবে প্রভাবান্বিত হয়। পরবর্তীতে অবশ্য পর্যটনশিল্পের উন্নতি ঘটেছে।
