== গেমস তৈরির পূর্বকথা ==
১৯৯৫ সালে রাসেল কে, স্টিভ হেমন্ড, ডেভিড জোনস এবং মাইক ডেইলি এই চার বন্ধু মিলে গেমটি তৈরি করেন। ডেভিড জোনস ছিলেন একজন কম্পিউটার প্রোগ্রামার এবং তার নিজস্ব একটি ভিডিও গেমস তৈরির প্রতিষ্ঠান ছিল<ref>http://www.prothom-alo.com/technology/article/91081/গ্র্যান্ড-থেফট-অটো</ref>। তারা গেমসটির প্রধান চরিত্র হিসেবে একজন পুলিশ কর্মকর্তাকে রাখতে চেয়েছিলেন। তারা একদিন যখন রাস্তা দিয়ে হেঁটে যাচ্ছিলেন তখন খেয়াল করেন একটি দোকানের ভেতরে কিছু গ্যাংস্টার দোকানের মালিককে চাঁদা না দেওয়ার জন্য মারছে। হঠাৎ করে ঘটনাস্থলে পুলিশ আসলে গ্যাংস্টারা পালিয়ে যায় এবং পুলিশ তাদের চেষ্টা করেও ধরতে সক্ষম হয় না। ডেভিড জোনস এবং মাইক ডেইলিকে প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী হিসেবে জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করা হয়। তারা তাদের কর্মস্থলে ফিরে আসলে তারা বুঝতে পারেন কেন্দ্রিয় চরিত্র হিসেবে পুলিশের বদলে গ্যাংস্টার রাখবেন। এতে গেমস এর আকর্ষণীয়তা বাড়বে। এছাড়াও পুলিশ হয়ে ভিলেনের পেছনে ঘোরার চেয়ে ভিলেন হয়ে পুলিশকে পেছনে ঘোরানোতে বেশি মজা পাওয়া যাবে।
