কলম্বো শহরটির পূর্ব নাম ছিল কালান-তোত্তা, যার অর্থ কেলানি নদীর ফেরিঘাট। আরব নাবিকেরা এর বিকৃত নাম দেয় কালাম্বু। ১৫১৭ সালে পর্তুগিজেরা ক্রিস্টোফার কলম্বাসের সম্মানে শহরের নাম বদলে কলম্বো রাখে। ১৬৫৬ সালে ওলন্দাজেরা এবং তারপর ১৭৯৬ সালে ব্রিটিশেরা শহরটি দখলে নেয়।
