প্রাচীন তামিল জনগোষ্ঠী অধ্যুষিত ভৌগোলিক অঞ্চল

তামিলকম বলতে প্রাচীন তামিল জাতির বাসভূমিকে বোঝায়। অধুনা তামিলনাড়ু, কেরল, পুদুচেরি, লক্ষদ্বীপ এবং অন্ধ্রপ্রদেশ ও কর্ণাটকের দক্ষিণাঞ্চল তামিলকমের অন্তর্গত ছিল।[১] ঐতিহ্যগত বিবরণ ও তোলকাপ্পিয়ম-এ এই অঞ্চলগুলিকে এক সাংস্কৃতিক এলাকা বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, যেখানে তামিল ছিল স্বাভাবিক ভাষা[note ১] এবং সকল অধিবাসীর সংস্কৃতি।[note ২] প্রাচীন তামিল দেশ একাধিক রাজ্যে বিভক্ত ছিল। এগুলির মধ্যে সর্বাধিক পরিচিত রাজ্যগুলি ছিল চের, চোল ও পাণ্ড্য রাজ্য। সঙ্গম যুগে তামিল সংস্কৃতি তামিলকমের বাইরে প্রসার লাভ করতে শুরু করে।[৪] প্রাচীন তামিল জনবসতি শ্রীলঙ্কা (শ্রীলঙ্কান তামিল) ও মালদ্বীপেও (গিরাবরু) পাওয়া যায়।
