THE EVANGELISTS. 19 the Christian world, and some of the arguments forthe credibility of their testimony are founded uponthe mode in which they accomplished their task.Matthew, who had been a collector of customs, wrotehis Gospel in Hebrew for the use of the Jews soonafter Christs death; Mark is believed to havewritten under the direction of Peter, for the useof the Christians at Rome; Luke, whose Gospel waswritten for the Heathen converts, was a physician,a companion in the labours of St. Paul, and is sup-posed to have written his account of Christ whiletravelling with the apostle; Johns Gospel was writ-ten after all the preceding, and notices circumstanceswhich the other evangelists had passed over. Thatpart of the New Testament which follows the fourGospels was also written by St. Luke, and gives theActs of the Apostles, and the history of Christianity,for about thirty years after Christs death.
