হিন্দু বর্ণপ্রথার প্রথম বর্ণ

ব্রাহ্মণ (/ˈbrɑːmɪn/, সংস্কৃত: ब्राह्मण) হল হিন্দু বর্ণপ্রথার প্রথম বর্ণ।[১] হিন্দুধর্মে ব্রাহ্মণ পুরোহিত (পুরোহিতপণ্ডিত বা পূজারী), শিক্ষক (আচার্য বা  গুরু) এবং বংশ পরম্পরায় ধর্মীয় শিক্ষার রক্ষক।[২][৩][৪][৫][৬][৭]

ব্রাহ্মণগণ আচমনজপ করছেন

ব্রাহ্মণদের ঐতিহ্যগত পেশা ছিল হিন্দু মন্দিরে বা সামাজিক-ধর্মীয় অনুষ্ঠানে যাজকত্ব এবং স্তব ও প্রার্থনার সাথে বিবাহের অনুষ্ঠানের মতো উত্তরণের আচার অনুষ্ঠান[৩][৮] তাত্ত্বিকভাবে, ব্রাহ্মণদের চারটি সামাজিক শ্রেণীর মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ ধর্মীয় মর্যাদা রয়েছে।[৯] তাদের জীবিকা কঠোর কঠোরতা এবং স্বেচ্ছামূলক দারিদ্র্যের মধ্যে একটি হিসাবে নির্ধারিত হয়।[১০] তবে ভারতীয় গ্রন্থগুলি অনুসারে, ব্রাহ্মণগণ কৃষিকাজ, যুদ্ধ, ব্যবসা, রাজকর্মচারী এবং অন্যান্য পেশার সাথেও যুক্ত ছিলেন।[৮][৯][১১]

বুৎপত্তি সম্পাদনা

অভিধানে ব্রাহ্মণ শব্দটি ব্রহ্ম শব্দ থেকে এসেছে। এটি সংস্কৃত ব্রোম/বৃনহ্+মন হতে উৎপত্তি। যার অর্থ হলো পরমাত্মা, পরমেশ্বর, পরমপুরুষ, বিধাতা, বেদমন্ত্র, তপস্যা, ওঙ্কার। যিনি ব্রহ্মকে জানেন তাকে ব্রাহ্মণ বলে।[১২]

আধুনিক পণ্ডিতদের মতে, প্রাচীন গ্রন্থে ব্রাহ্মণ শব্দটি জাতিকে বোঝায় না, তবে কেবল প্রচারক বা কোনো ঐতিহ্যের পথপ্রদর্শক।[১৩][১৪][১৫] জন্মসূত্রে মূলত কেউ ব্রাহ্মণ হয়না, কর্মগুণে ব্রাহ্মণ হয়। ভগবদ্গীতায় ব্রাহ্মণদের কর্ম সম্পর্কে বলা আছে:[১৬]

শমো দমস্তপঃ শৌচং ক্ষান্তিরার্জবমেব চ।

জ্ঞানং বিজ্ঞানমাস্তিক্যং ব্রহ্মকর্ম স্বভাবজম্।।

অনুবাদঃ শম, দম, তপ, শৌচ, ক্ষান্তি, সরলতা, জ্ঞান, বিজ্ঞান ও আস্তিক্য-এগুলি ব্রাহ্মণদের স্বভাবজাত কর্ম।

হিন্দু ধর্মগ্রন্থে সম্পাদনা

বৈদিক শাস্ত্রে সম্পাদনা

সম্ভাব্য সামাজিক শ্রেণী হিসাবে "ব্রাহ্মণ"-এর প্রাচীনতম অনুমিতর উল্লেখ ঋগ্বেদে আছে, একবারই পাওয়া যায়, এবং সূক্তটিকে বলা হয় পুরুষসূক্ত[১৭] মণ্ডল ১০, ঋগ্বেদ ১০.৯০.১১-১২-এর ঋক অনুসারে, ব্রাহ্মণদেরকে পুরুষের মুখ থেকে উদ্ভূত বলে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে, শরীরের সেই অংশ যেখান থেকে শব্দ বের হয়।[১৮]

পুরুষসূক্ত বর্ণ শ্লোকটিকে এখন সাধারণত পরবর্তী সময়ে বৈদিক পাঠে সন্নিবেশিত করা হয়েছে বলে মনে করা হয়, সম্ভবত সনদ মিথ হিসেবে।[১৯] স্টেফানি জ্যামিসন ও জোয়েল ব্রেরেটন, সংস্কৃত ও ধর্মীয় অধ্যয়নের অধ্যাপক, বলেন, "বিস্তৃত, বহু-বিভক্ত এবং ব্যাপক বর্ণপ্রথার জন্য ঋগ্বেদে কোন প্রমাণ নেই", এবং "বর্ণ ব্যবস্থাটি ঋগ্বেদে ভ্রূণীয় বলে মনে হয় এবং তখন এবং পরবর্তীতে, সামাজিক বাস্তবতার পরিবর্তে সামাজিক আদর্শ"।[১৯]

শ্রৌত সূত্র সম্পাদনা

কুলকার্নির মতে, গৃহ্য সূত্রে বলা হয়েছে যে, যজ্ঞ, অধ্যয়ন (বেদ অধ্যয়ন ও শিক্ষা), দান প্রতিগ্রহ (গ্রহণ করা এবং উপহার দেওয়া) হল "ব্রাহ্মণদের বিশেষ দায়িত্ব ও সুযোগ-সুবিধা"।[২০]

ধর্মসূত্র ও ধর্মশাস্ত্রে সম্পাদনা

হিন্দুধর্মের ধর্মসূত্রধর্মশাস্ত্র গ্রন্থগুলি ব্রাহ্মণদের প্রত্যাশা, কর্তব্য ও ভূমিকা বর্ণনা করে।

জন বুসানিচ বলেছেন যে প্রাচীন ভারতীয় গ্রন্থে ব্রাহ্মণদের জন্য নির্ধারিত নৈতিক নীতিগুলি গ্রীক সদগুণ-নৈতিকতার অনুরূপ, যে "মানুর ধার্মিক ব্রাহ্মণকে অ্যারিস্টটলের ব্যবহারিক জ্ঞানের লোকের সাথে তুলনা করা যেতে পারে",[২১] এবং "গুণসম্পন্ন ব্রাহ্মণ প্লেটোনিক-অ্যারিস্টোটেলিয়ান দার্শনিকের মতন নন" এই পার্থক্যের সাথে যে পরেরটি যাজকীয় ছিল না।[২২]

ব্রাহ্মণ শব্দটি প্রাচীন ও মধ্যযুগীয় সূত্র এবং বৌদ্ধজৈনধর্মের ভাষ্য গ্রন্থে ব্যাপকভাবে দেখা যায়।[২৩]

আধুনিক পণ্ডিতরা বলেছেন যে প্রাচীন গ্রন্থে ব্রাহ্মণ শব্দের এই ধরনের ব্যবহার কোন জাতিকে বোঝায় না, তবে কেবল "প্রভু" (বিশেষজ্ঞ), অভিভাবক, নির্জন, প্রচারক বা কোনো ঐতিহ্যের পথপ্রদর্শক।[১৩][১৪][১৫] বৌদ্ধ ও অন্যান্য অ-হিন্দু ঐতিহ্যে ব্রাহ্মণের বিকল্প প্রতিশব্দ হল মহানো।[১৩]
