জন গুল্ড (১৪ সেপ্টেম্বর, ১৮০৪-৩ ফেব্রুয়ারি, ১৮৮১) একজন ইংলিশ পক্ষীবিদ। পাখিদের পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ ও বৈজ্ঞানিকভাবে সঠিক ছবি আঁকার জন্য তিনি পরিচিত। পাখি বিষয়ক অসংখ্য মনোগ্রাফ প্রকাশ করেছেন তিনি। স্ত্রী এলিজাবেথ গুল্ড এবং অ্যাডওয়ার্ড লিয়ার, হেনরি কন্সটানটাইন রিখটার, জোসেফ উলফ, উইলিয়াম ম্যাথিউ হার্ট প্রমুখ চিত্রকর ও পক্ষীবিজ্ঞানীর সহায়তায় তিনি প্রচুর পশুপাখির ছবি আঁকেন। এসব ছবির অনেকগুলো তার নিজের প্রকাশিত মনোগ্রাফ ও বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রকাশনায় স্থান পেয়েছে। তাকে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার পক্ষীবিজ্ঞানের জনক বলা হয়। তার নামানুসারে অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় গুল্ড লিগ প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। গুল্ড ডারউইনের ফিঞ্চ নিয়ে গবেষণা করেন ও তার প্রাপ্ত ফলাফল ডারউইনের প্রাকৃতিক নির্বাচন মতবাদকে সমর্থন করে। তার এ আবিষ্কার ডারউইন তার ''অন দ্য অরিজিন অব স্পিশিজ'' বইয়ে ব্যবহার করেন।

প্রাথমিক জীবন সম্পাদনা

গুল্ড ইংল্যান্ডের ডরসেটে লাইম রেজিসে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি ছিলেন তার পিতামাতার প্রথম সন্তান। তার পিতা ছিলেন একজন মালি। তার পিতা সারের গিল্ডফোর্ডে একটি এস্টেটে কাজ পেয়ে যান। পরবর্তীতে ১৮১৮ সালে তিনি উইন্ডসরের রয়েল গার্ডেন্সে ফোরম্যানের দায়িত্ব পান। ছোটবেলায় গুল্ড মালি হিসেবে প্রশিক্ষণ লাভ করেন। তার পিতার অধীনে ১৮১৮ থেকে ১৮২৪ পর্যন্ত তিনি উইন্ডসরে কর্মরত থাকেন। পরে উত্তর ইয়র্কশায়ারের রিপ্লি দুর্গে তিনি মালির দায়িত্বে অধিষ্ঠিত হন। একসময় চামড়া সংরক্ষণ শিল্পে তিনি বিশেষজ্ঞ হয়ে ওঠেন। ১৮২৪ সালে লন্ডনে তিনি চামড়া সংরক্ষণ ব্যবসার সাথে জড়িয়ে যান। সংরক্ষণবিদ্যায় তার অভিজ্ঞতার কারণে ১৮২৭ সালে জ্যুলজিক্যাল সোসাইটি অব লন্ডন জাদুঘরের প্রথম কিউরেটর ও সংরক্ষক হিসেবে তিনি দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত হন।[১][২]
